Fake body discovered as part of funeral union asbestos abatement protest

A ghoulish union protest in lower Manhattan has gone from bad to corpse. Some local residents were already upset that a coffin was being used as a prop to rally against a nonunion asbestos abatement firm at 176 Broadway in lower Manhattan. Then they noticed a macabre addition: a fake body inside. “I’m disgusted by it,” said a woman who lives in the building and gave her name as Cathy. “The mannequin is taking it way too far.” ... read more >>

Cigar sales see worldwide slump

The Cuban cigar has historically been a status symbol among wealthy businessmen and, for Americans, forbidden fruit. But the recession has forced many to rethink their spending on amenities, and Cuban cigar sales plummeted last year. As a result, cigar producers and local cigar bars have begun targeting a new and perhaps unlikely segment of smokers: women. ... read more >>

Call for cigarette taxes to be raised after Europe ruling

Anti-smoking group Ash Ireland has called on the Government to increase taxes on cigarettes after the European Court of Justice ruled that Irish legislation which empowers the Government to fix a minimum price for cigarettes violates European law. In a judgment handed down yesterday, the court found Ireland had breached a directive which sets down rules governing the calculation of excise duty on tobacco products. ... read more >>

Gonjasufi: A Sufi and a Killer

Gonjasufi – aka California’s Sumach Ecks – sounds like a human radio that’s stuck between stations. Songs on his debut LP crackle in and out of life and dance between genres: one minute he’s croaking out-of-frequency soul, the next it’s a Big Boi-style hip-hop rundown. It’s all over the place, but thrillingly so. ... read more >>

Door-to-door program helps quit smoking

U.S. researchers found offering door-to-door counseling helped new moms cut down on smoking. Brad Collins of Temple University in Philadelphia and colleagues offered Philadelphia Family Rules for Establishing Smoke-free Homes — a 16-week intensive one-on-one counseling program. Previous research had found 40 percent of new moms in North Philadelphia either smoked currently or had smoked late into their pregnancies, and were increasing their babies’ risks of sudden infant death syndrome, asthma, lung or ear infections. ... read more >>

Exit Through the Gift Shop

He is Britain’s newest national treasure: but he presumably won’t be accepting a TV viewers’ award from Ant and Dec any time soon, or making libertarian interventions in the smoking debate, or writing an annual Christmas Diary for the London Review of Books or posing alongside his mum with his CBE outside Buckingham Palace in his grey topper and chimp mask. Perhaps his mum would have to wear a chimp mask as well. ... read more >>

The sad, early death of a smoker, aged 85

Albert “Dick” Whittamore has been granted his dying wish by having his funeral hearse decked out with placards declaring “Smoking killed me”. I understand Mr Wittamore suffered from the lung condition emphysema for years and that should be wished on no one. I doubt there’s an emphysema sufferer anywhere who says that it’s worth it for all those lovely cigarettes they’ve enjoyed over the years. ... read more >>

Pot and alcohol use rises among teens

Teen pot and alcohol use is on the rise for the first time in a decade, a disturbing trend that could lead to long-term health risks, according to studies released this week. The annual survey released by The Partnership for a Drug-Free America found that the number of high school students who said they drank alcohol in the last month rose 11% in 2009, with 39% of teens (or 6.5 million) reporting that they drink. And 25% of teens said they’d smoked pot in the last month, a figure that had increased from 19% the year before. ... read more >>

Two photos in the news this morning. Relax! Neither has anything to do with healthcare: Not that many of us are seeing many of these $50 bills these days. But in case you ever do, how do you feel about subbing out the picture of the 18th president, Ulysses S. Grant, for the 40th president, Ronald Reagan? A North Carolina representative, Patrick McHenry, has introduced a bill to replace Grant’s visage with Reagan’s. Republican president Ronald Reagan ... read more >>

Pasadena to explore possibility of citywide smoking ban

City council members will consider next month the possibility of an outright ban on smoking in city limits. On Monday, the council’s Public Safety Committee discussed a long-proposed ban on smoking in apartment buildings, and Councilman Steve Haderlein asked the staff to find out whether the city has the legal authority to put a full smoking ban into place. Pasadena passed a ban on outdoor smoking in most public areas in 2008, and at the time pledged to consider the apartment restrictions within the next year. ... read more >>
