Marketing and snobbery aside, what drives some drinkers to reach for top-shelf vodka brands over more lowly (and lower-priced) “well” varieties? According to a team of Russian-American chemists, certain molecule clusters in vodka taste better than others. Vodka’s longstanding reputation as a colorless and tasteless concoction is coupled with the fact that all vodka brands use the same combination of 40 percent pure ethyl alcohol (ethanol) and 60 percent pure water, the study authors noted. ... read more >>

Another alcohol tax hike set to sting drinkers
Monday, June 14th, 2010
Britain’s alcohol prices are about to be hiked once again as the cost of beer, wine and spirits are set to rise in the forthcoming emergency Budget. It will be the second such tax rise in three months as the Treasury considers a repeat of the 5 per cent increase in alcohol duty imposed in the March Budget. Chancellor George Osborne is set to reveal the tax-raising package next week and reports say that VAT is likely to be increased as well. ... read more >>

Binge drinking: only one measure can solve our drink problem
Monday, June 7th, 2010
When the health watchdog National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence – or Nice – last week produced its much-anticipated recommendations to curb alcohol abuse, things turned nasty. Curbing excessive drinking might, it was revealed, mean doctors probing their patients’ drinking habits, banning alcohol advertising – an industry worth £800m a year – and putting a minimum price on a unit of alcohol to end Britain’s binge drinking culture. ... read more >>

Just the one drink, darling?

The latest example of state-led nannying over alcohol consumption does not mix well with the long history of British enthusiasm for drink, says Stuart Walton. To Jane Austen, writing to her sister Cassandra in 1808 from their moneyed brother Edward’s place in Kent, there could be no doubt of what constituted the good life. ... read more >>

Screwcaps on Wine Are Here to Stay
Saturday, May 29th, 2010
There is a wide variety of baffling nomenclature in the wine world. Newcomers may wonder why flavors described as “tar,” “tobacco,” or “forest floor” could possibly be construed as good things, and how there can be a difference between aroma (the smell of the grapes in the wine) and bouquet (the smell of the wine). ... read more >>

Occasional drink may protect against Alzheimer’s Disease
Tuesday, May 25th, 2010
Researchers claim they have found a link that suggests the occasional drink keeps the illness at bay especially in women and non-smokers. Spanish researchers compared the personal and health backgrounds of subjects affected with Alzheimer’s disease with healthy people of the same age and gender mix. They found that the risk of Alzheimer’s was unaffected by the amount of cigarettes smoked, but a protective effect of moderate alcohol consumption was observed, this effect was more evident in non-smoking women. ... read more >>

Study Challenges Notion That Moderate Drinking Protects the Heart
Thursday, May 20th, 2010
A major French study links moderate drinking to a lower risk for cardiovascular disease, but challenges the notion that moderate drinking gets the credit. Instead, the researchers say, people who drink moderately tend to have a higher social status, exercise more, suffer less depression and enjoy superior health overall compared to heavy drinkers and lifetime abstainers. ... read more >>

Craving a Beer During Pregnancy: How Much Is Safe to Drink?
Thursday, May 6th, 2010
I really want a beer. It has been one of my more bizarre pregnancy cravings. So in an effort to slake this particular thirst, I embarked on a mission to prove that a little frothy beer wouldn’t hurt my developing fetus. I was dismayed to learn that no one, no medical literature or obstetrician, could justify my drinking a beer. ... read more >>
