If “The Hurt Locker” wins the Oscar for best picture Sunday night — and at this stage, the race is really down to either “Avatar” or the Kathryn Bigelow-directed film about bomb disposal experts in Iraq — it will be the first war film to earn the academy’s top honor in nearly 25 years. In the past 40 years, only three bona fide war films have won the top Oscar — 1970’s “Patton,” 1978’s “The Deer Hunter” and 1986’s “Platoon.” ... read more >>

Power of the cinema is leading young people to smoke
Monday, February 8th, 2010
It’s easy to make fun of people who blame Hollywood for everything. After all, movies are merely entertainment. Movie studios are neither missionary chapels nor outposts of political correctness. They’re businesses. As a producer once remarked, “We don’t make movies. We make money.” ... read more >>

The death of Marlon Brando reminds us of the power of the movies to create a lasting image. Half a century after Brando wowed audiences with his torn undershirt, it is still that image that we remember – not the overweight, aging Brando of recent decades. Much has changed in 50 years, and the smoldering Brando seems almost quaint by today’s movie standards. But one thing hasn’t changed: a cigarette hanging from his lips is still part of the bad-boy image. And smoking is still part of a sexy and strong image of women in movies, too. ... read more >>

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Those who oppose smoking in movies aimed at young people planned to step up their assault on the science-fiction epic “Avatar” on Tuesday with advertisements in Hollywood trade papers that accuse the film of providing the equivalent of $50 million in free tobacco advertising. The full-page ads were scheduled to run in both The Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety. For every $100 million it earns at the box office, “Avatar” will “deliver an estimated 40 million tobacco impressions to theater audiences,” said the ads, referring to scenes involving a cigarette-smoking character played by Sigourney Weaver. ... read more >>
