WASHINGTON -President Obama’s second state dinner Wednesday night was a feast of glamour, gags, and gossip with a touch of politics – and not a single gatecrasher. The event’s chief head-turners were First Lady Michele Obama, resplendent in a shimmering, cobalt blue, one-strap gown by Peter Soronen; as well as Gayle King and Eva Longoria Parker decked out in orange toga-syle affairs. ... read more >>

What makes tobacco so addictive?
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
BILL: After President Obama’s recent health checkup, he was reported to be in very good shape. But the small print at the end of many articles said he still had not been able to quit smoking. This is the second time he’s gotten that kind of annual report. You know, Dave, I’ve heard more than one 12-Stepper say it was harder to quit tobacco than drinking. But addiction prone as I am, I never smoked, so the subject is a mystery. What makes tobacco so addictive? ... read more >>

In Memory of Patrick Swayze, Songwriter Encourages People to Throw Away Cigarettes – and She’ll Give You Her New CD – Free!
Monday, November 23rd, 2009
Karen Sokolof Javitch is hoping that her new CD: STAR TRACKS – THE TRIBUTE ALBUM will encourage people to throw away their cigarettes! “It’s worth a try,” says Javitch, who decided to dedicate her CD to Patrick Swayze, who recently died of pancreatic cancer. “He was a 3-pack-a-day smoker, and never quit, even when he got sick.” Her mother also died at age 56 (like Patrick) and she is sure cigarette smoking contributed to her death. “The one thing we have control over in getting cancer is cigarette smoking!” “THROW THOSE CIGGIES AWAY AND I’LL SEND YOU A FREE CD TODAY!” And of course that includes President Obama, who she surmises has not kicked his habit. ... read more >>

Roll Your Own Tax Rate
Monday, November 23rd, 2009
There are no records kept on how fast loopholes can be uncovered in new federal law, but the roll-your-own tobacco industry is making a breathtaking run for this year’s shabby laurels. No sooner had President Obama signed the new children’s health insurance law last spring than the industry pried open a lucrative escape from the 20-fold tax increase levied on roll-your-own cigarettes to help support the program. ... read more >>

LETTERS: Reader unhappy with Tribune columnist

I found myself deeply moved recently when I was introduced to a historic location in New Albany that few people know is even there. On Ekin Avenue, just west of Silver Street Elementary School, is the New Albany National Cemetery. This cemetery is one of only seven established by Congress in 1862 for burial of Union and Confederate casualties. There are over 7,000 interments there, now, from seven wars including the Civil War, Indian Wars, the Spanish American War, World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam. ... read more >>

Cigarette Companies Use Color, Rather than Words, To Convey Message

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is being given new authority to regulate the manufacturing and marketing of tobacco, after President Obama signed the ‘”Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act” into law last June. Starting next summer, large labels, warning about the health risks associated with smoking, must cover at least half of the front and back of cigarette packs. Certain flavored cigarettes will also be banned, and words like ‘light’ and ‘mild’ will no longer be allowed. The FDA cites studies that show those words give consumers a false sense that a ‘light’ or ‘mild’ cigarette is less harmful or may be easier to quit. ... read more >>

Tobacco Blow Back
Monday, September 14th, 2009
When President Obama signed a law in June that limits the ability of tobacco companies to advertise, he was all but inviting a Constitutional challenge. And that’s just what he’s getting, now that several of the nation’s largest cigarette makers have filed a federal lawsuit to block parts of the new law on First Amendment grounds. ... read more >>

Is The FDA Blowing Smoke On E Cigarettes, Or Is Their Fight Dissipating Like Vapor?
Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
As the FDA put out a news release concerning its stance on electronic cigarette products a few weeks ago, the administration only tested two different brands. What many e-cigarette users say is important about these brands is that they are made by the two manufacturers currently suing the FDA in federal court, Smoking Everywhere and Njoy. ... read more >>
