School helps pupils kick smoking habit

Nicotine-addicted pupils at Mana College in Porirua can now get patches, gum and lozenges from the school nurse to help them kick the smoking habit. The school nurse has been registered as a Quit Group provider, a programme funded by the Health Ministry, which means she can provide cigarette substitutes to pupils, if they pass an assessment, as well as other coaching. ... read more >>

The President may have kicked his smoking habit once and for all. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says it has been about nine months since the President’s last cigarette. The comment came in an interview with CNN’s Candy Crowley. Gibbs says the President still chews nicotine gum, but used “stubborn willpower” to stop. Two wars, a jobless recovery and a brutal Election Day might make some folks nervous enough to grab a cigarette. But the hard times have had the opposite effect on President Obama, who hasn’t had a smoke in nearly a year, according to his White House spokesman. “I’ve not seen or witnessed evidence of smoking in probably nine months,” Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters Thursday. “I think he has worked extremely hard. Surprising hike

Hoping increase in smoking rate proves to be ‘aberration’. For the first time in almost 15 years, the rate of smoking among American adults has increased. That’s a number that we find both surprising and distressing.
