Parents warned over exam binge drinking

More than a third of parents plan to provide 16 and 17-year-olds with drink for summer breaks, it was disclosed. Of those, around half said they would buy sons or daughters five or more bottles of wine or spirits – well above the recommended weekly alcohol intake for adults. Tobacco Rule Proposed in ’95 to Go Into Effect

Fifteen years after the Food and Drug Administration first proposed banning the sale and marketing of tobacco products to teenagers, top government officials announced Thursday that they would finally put the rule into effect. The rule was hugely controversial when first proposed in 1995 and was never adopted by the agency because of a Supreme Court ruling that legislation was needed to empower the F.D.A. to regulate tobacco products. Ryan Baucom, the co-owner of a downtown Sarasota nightspot that caters to the 18-25 crowd, has turned to an old custom to attract young customers. At The Box Social club, Baucom recently started renting out a hookah. Business is so good he plans to buy another. “It’s becoming more and more popular,” he said. People got an ugly look at the dangers of smoking Monday. The group Tobacco Free Florida set up shop outside Amway Arena to tell fans not to smoke. They took pictures to show how they’d look in 20 years if they keep using cigarettes.
