A four-apartment home at 93-95 East Clark St. was destroyed Sunday afternoon when a woman, who breathes with the aid of an oxygen tank, lit a cigarette that caused an explosion, Ilion Fire Department officials said. Ilion fire Chief James Trevett said the fire began in the woman’s first-floor apartment at 95 East Clark St. around 1 p.m. The fire then spread through shared walls to 93 East Clark St.
The woman, who was unharmed, escaped with the help of family members who were in the apartment when the explosion occurred. Officials were not releasing her name Sunday.
Other residents of the apartment building, located across the street from Remington Arms, were home at the time of the fire, but no injuries were reported, officials said.
“It went up through the walls and burned through the attic,” said Trevett, who deemed the structure a total loss.
The back peak of 95 East Clark St. completely disintegrated in the blaze and charred debris surrounded the house. Yellow tape blocked off the scene.
Mike Johnson of Ilion heard the explosion that started the fire, but said he wasn’t alarmed at first.
“It sounded like a snow plow dropping,” Johnson said. “It was snowing, so I thought maybe that’s all it was.”
Others surrounding the scene Sunday afternoon expressed concern for the apartment residents.
Carol Boucher of Ilion said she was driving on a nearby street when she saw flames and smoke coming from the nearby building.
“It’s really too bad,” Boucher said. “It seems like things like this happen around Christmastime.”
The Frankfort Fire Department also responded.
